Proper Hydration Guide: Weird Ways Dehydration Affects the Face

Did you know that the first signs of dehydration show up on your face? You might not know it, but being water deficient has a direct impact on your facial skin. The facial skin is more sensitive to fluid changes compared to skin from other body parts. Since the facial skin is always exposed to the elements, it is also the most vulnerable to dehydration. In this proper hydration guide, we are looking deeper into the negative impact of dehydration on the face and what you can do to prevent them:

Dry, Itchy Skin

Does your skin feel extra parched, itchy, or generally sensitive? Sounds like you could use a sip (or ten!) of water! Dry skin is one of the hallmark signs of dehydration. When you’re not getting enough water, the body holds on to as much fluids as it possibly can. Since the body needs fluids to power other organs, the moisture from the skin is utilized to hydrate other organs, such as the brain or the heart. This leaves the skin parched and in dire need of water!

Feed your skin from the inside by drinking at least 8 glasses of water every day. It also helps to eat fruits and veggies that have high water content. Always apply a hydrating moisturizer day and night to keep skin hydrated and supple.

Premature Wrinkles

Dry skin is one of the most common causes of premature aging! When the skin is dry, the epidermis is likely to develop fine lines. When the skin is lacking in moisture, the skin tissues become even more sensitive to the elements. Sun exposure, harsh cleansing products, smoking, and alcohol drinking, all these activities cause even more damage to dry skin. Since the skin is more sensitive to lifestyle and environmental stressors, the elastin within the skin tissues become weaker. This makes the skin susceptible to premature wrinkles.

Drinking more water helps replenish all the lost fluids, keeping the skin plump, well hydrated, and younger looking. Sticking to a healthy skin routine also helps stave off premature wrinkles.

Ever wonder why your breakouts seem to get worse whenever you feel parched or dehydrated? That’s because water deficiency could cause bouts of acne. Studies show that dehydration could affect the texture and flora of the skin. When you are not getting enough fluids, the skin becomes dry, flaky, and itchy. These changes trigger the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum. This is the body’s way of compensating for the lack of moisture.

Unfortunately, the excessive production of sebum increases the risk of clogged pores and inflammation. All these lead to bouts of adult acne. You can keep acne at bay and retain your smooth complexion by drinking up! Sticking to a healthy skin care regimen is also a terrific way to keep your skin pimple-free.

Dark Under Eyes

Got dark under eyes even when you slept well the night before? You might need to boost your water intake to make panda eyes go away! When you’re water deficient, the thin skin around the eyes take on a sunken appearance, making dark under eyes even more noticeable. Since the delicate skin around the eyes is quite sensitive, it is more susceptible to dehydration. Apart from cutting back on alcohol, minimizing your caffeine intake and drinking more water will make dark under eyes less obvious. Also, sleep early whenever possible.

Dull Skin

Nothing dulls the skin quite like water deficiency! When you’re not getting enough water, the blood loses volume. When the blood loses volume, major organs, like the skin, are not getting enough oxygenated blood. The heart also works extra hard pumping out thick blood all over the system. When the skin is not getting the nutrients it needs to stay healthy, it takes on an unsightly ashy tone.

While there are many reasons the skin becomes dull, dehydration is one of the most common and often overlooked. Do your skin a favor and drink more water to keep your complexion bright, youthful, and plump!

Is your skin showing signs of dehydration? Water deficiency affects different organs, particularly the skin. Stay hydrated to maintain a beautiful complexion.
